HELP SOUGHT FOR HEALTH EDUCATION IN HURRICANE AFTERMATH
Monday, September 26, 2005 -- In response to a request from Lew Miller, the Coalition has offered to assist in raising funds for a medical/health education project to prevent infection among the populations affected by Katrina - and in the future by Rita.
As you know, the threat of flood-borne infections, such as diarrhea, cholera and Norwalk virus, is increasing daily in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. A client of Lew's firm, WentzMiller & Associates, is Mediworld, a leading CME company in India (headed by the president-elect of the Indian Medical Assn.). Mediworld has volunteered to use the vast experience in India to prepare a set of simple, brief educational materials for doctors, paramedics and the general public, alerting each target group to the significant life-threatening symptoms and what to do about these. The State Departments of Health of the three states have all agreed in writing to distribute the materials (in total, 900,000 copies to the general public; 100,000 to paramedics and 50,000 to
physicians) as soon as available.
Infectious disease specialists here have reviewed and approved the contents, prepared in India. Printing has just been completed and the copies expressed to the Health Departments.
Mediworld, assisted by Healthways, a medical education company, is carrying out this project at cost, which is estimated to be between $65-75,000, primarily for printing and shipping. As noted, the state health officers have agreed to arrange for distribution. WentzMiller is volunteering its time in review and in seeking funding.
GAME will serve as a 501-c-3 passthrough for contributions, which should be sent to:
